Border vigilance key after repatriation of 120 trafficked Nigerians — Lawyer

Security authorities in Ghana must immediately fortify the nation’s borders to prevent the re-entry of over one hundred Nigerian nationals recently deported over cybercrime and human trafficking offenses, a Ricjard Nii Amarh, a private legal practitioner has warned.

The caution comes on the heels of “Operation Cyberhunt,” a joint security initiative that led to the dismantling of a major criminal syndicate and the subsequent repatriation of 120 Nigerian citizens discovered working under forced conditions in illicit cyber operations.

Weighing in on the diplomatic and security implications of the swoop, Richard Nii Amarh, Head of the Legal Department at the Centre for Legitimacy and Rule of Law, noted that while the state exercised its sovereign right to safeguard national stability, long-term success hinges on post-deportation surveillance.

“When you balance the opportunity costs involved, the decision taken by the government remains pivotal to preserving domestic peace and security,” Lawyer Amarh stated during an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem. “The state reserves every legal right to issue re-entry bans against these persons following their removal from our jurisdiction.”

He further underscored the necessity of robust border enforcement to ensure the prohibition produces tangible results rather than temporary relief.

“Imposing an entry ban on paper is only the first step. Without strict border controls and active monitoring mechanisms in place, these same individuals could easily find their way back into the country,” he cautioned.

The Minister of Communications, Samuel Nartey George, previously confirmed the deportation exercise, revealing that the affected persons were victims of human trafficking rings that forced them into digital fraud schemes.

The repatriation process was facilitated through a coordinated effort involving local security institutions, international law enforcement partners, and the Ghana Air Force.

As security personnel maintain heightened surveillance across key transit routes, the lawyer emphasised that strong regional cooperation and airtight border security remain crucial to preventing transnational syndicates from taking root in the country.
