Renowned Ghanaian actor and film director Joseph Van Vicker has initiated legal action against fellow actor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, over allegedly libelous and defamatory remarks published in a viral video.
According to court documents filed at the High Court of Justice, General Jurisdiction Division in Accra, Van Vicker is seeking GH¢10 million in exemplary damages, as well as general damages for libel.
The lawsuit stems from a video circulating across social media platforms including TikTok and Facebook, posted under the headline “LIL WIN BANS VAN VICKER FROM ACTING IN KUMASI!”. In the video, authored in the Twi language, Lil Win accused Van Vicker of lying, dishonouring his production company, and failing to show up for film roles after committing to them.
In his statement of claim, Van Vicker argues that the comments falsely paint him as dishonest, deceitful, and unprofessional in his career as an actor, director, and producer. He further contends that Lil Win maliciously published the video to stir up public hatred, boost ratings on social media, and generate publicity for his upcoming film project.
The suit also points out that Lil Win’s threat to ban Van Vicker from working or travelling to Kumasi infringes on his constitutional rights. The plaintiff noted that he now lives in fear and has been forced to cancel planned business trips to Kumasi due to concerns over potential public hostility.
In addition to the monetary compensation, Van Vicker is asking the court to order a full retraction and apology published on news portals with the same prominence for four consecutive weeks, alongside an injunction preventing Lil Win from making further defamatory statements.
The writ of summons, issued by legal counsel Ebenezer Asare of Troth Legal, commands Kwadwo Nkansah to enter an appearance within eight days of service.
