‘We are ready to go to jail’ — Drivers threaten resistance over Traffitech-GH penalties

Transport operators in the country have strongly opposed the implementation of the Traffitech-GH automated camera enforcement system, describing the associated financial penalties as excessively harsh and economically unfeasible for commercial and private motorists.

Addressing concerns on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Akwasi Amoah, the National Chairman of the Drivers and Car Owners Association, contended that the penalty regime seems engineered to penalise motorists disproportionately rather than foster road discipline.

Mr Amoah warned that the motoring public would not hesitate to resist the punitive measures if authorities failed to review them, questioning the fairness of fines that threaten to criminalise everyday driving livelihoods.

“We are ready to go to Nsawam if that is what government wants,” he cautioned, highlighting the growing frustration among transport operators.

While acknowledging that road users must operate within the ambits of the law, Mr Amoah argued that deploying automated speed and traffic violation cameras is a misdirected remedy for the nation’s persistent road safety challenges. He asserted that sustainable safety on the roads requires structural interventions rather than automated punitive ticketing.

He called on the Presidency to redirect attention and resources toward upgrading the standards of driving schools nationwide, ensuring that instructors receive adequate pedagogical guidance to equip learners with rigorous road sense.

In addition to concerns over the camera system, Mr Amoah decried what he described as unrelenting harassment by law enforcement officers along major transport corridors, lamenting that relentless police checks round the clock have placed an undue burden on drivers.

He nonetheless urged his colleagues to remain vigilant, prioritise passenger safety, and strictly observe traffic regulations to minimize accidents across the country.
