Security agencies in the Ashanti Region have launched a massive manhunt following a jailbreak at the Konongo Police Station in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality, where six remand prisoners fled custody.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the escapees managed to flee after digging a breach through the cell wall that connected to an adjoining washroom. Once outside, the detainees scaled the perimeter fencing and fled into nearby surroundings.
Although security personnel swiftly responded and managed to track down and recapture one of the fugitives in Kumasi, five others remain on the run.
Confirming the development, the Chief Executive for Asante Akyem Central, Dr Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo, stated that the Municipal Security Council has initiated urgent steps to reinforce the structural integrity of the facility.
He disclosed that local authorities plan to construct a modern police station to prevent future breaches, alongside immediate security enhancements including upgraded security lighting, surveillance camera installations, and increased nightly police personnel deployment.
