A suspect who was among six inmates that broke out of the Konongo Police cells in the Ashanti Region’s Asante Akyem Central Municipality has been re-apprehended by law enforcement officers.
Security personnel launched a swift manhunt shortly after the break-out, successfully tracking down and taking one of the fugitives back into custody in a Kumasi suburb. Police operations are currently underway to locate and arrest the five remaining escapees who are still on the run.
The group staged their escape by tunnelling through a wall towards the police station’s detached washroom facility before scaling down and fleeing into the night.
The Chief Executive for the Asante Akyem Central Municipal Assembly, Dr Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo, confirmed the situation and noted that the Municipal Security Council is acting promptly to overhaul security measures at the station.
According to Dr Aidoo, immediate plans are being executed to reinforce the physical structure of the cell walls to avert further breaches.
Longer-term strategies to forestall future occurrences include the construction of an entirely new police station, alongside a higher deployment of police personnel to boost night-time security duties in the community.
Assembly authorities are also moving to enhance visibility around the existing premises by upgrading lighting systems and installing surveillance cameras to ensure comprehensive oversight of the station grounds.
