GAUA suspends strike action as government tackles 80 percent of demands

Normal administrative business is set to resume across Ghana’s public universities on Monday following a decision by the Ghana Association of University Administrators to put its industrial action on hold.

The resolution comes on the back of fruitful engagements with state authorities, during which the government successfully resolved eighty percent of the key grievances raised by the association.

GAUA had withdrawn its services to protest widening disparities in market premiums and other critical allowances between teaching and non-teaching staff across tertiary institutions nationwide. The industrial action had significantly disrupted day-to-day administrative operations and essential support services across public university campuses.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, October 16, National President of GAUA, Kwaku Karikari Amoah, explained that the executive body was satisfied with the commitment shown by officials so far.

“On that basis, we agreed that we unanimously suspend this strike so that our members will go back to their offices Monday to work,” he said.

The core of the dispute hinged on long-standing agitation for equity in remuneration and overall conditions of service, with non-teaching personnel demanding fair treatment relative to their academic colleagues.

While the strike suspension brings immediate relief to the higher education sector, twenty percent of the association’s demands remain outstanding. The leadership of GAUA is anticipated to maintain dialogue with government representatives in the coming weeks to secure a complete resolution to the lingering matters.
