Over 2,000 ECG containers cleared from port, 280 remain stuck — Deputy Minister

About 2,000 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that were stranded at the port have been evacuated, while approximately 280 containers are still outstanding, the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Richard Gyan-Mensah, has revealed.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) during its hearing on the 2025 Auditor-General’s Reports, the Deputy Minister explained that the issue was referred to the Ministry of Energy and is currently being managed by a dedicated committee which he chairs.

Hon. Gyan-Mensah, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Gomoa West, noted that out of an initial batch of 2,626 containers slated for retrieval, the team successfully moved the majority to designated storage areas, though a remaining set of about 283 containers has proved difficult to pinpoint within the port precinct.

“About 2,000 of the containers have been evacuated and kept with the Ministry of Energy and some with ECG warehouse. We still have some few, about 283, that are unidentified,” he told the committee.

Addressing the progress of the task, the Deputy Minister clarified that no formal statement has been released regarding the end of the operation, as the exercise remains ongoing.

“There hasn’t been any official communication on the official report of the completion of the assignment. We are yet to come out officially on that,” he said.

Outlining the operational challenges encountered during the exercise, Hon. Gyan-Mensah disclosed that work commenced at a rapid pace, with teams moving upwards of 50 containers daily. However, the momentum eventually stalled, dropping to just two containers per day, and during certain periods, none at all for an entire week.

He attributed the delay to the wide dispersion of the cargo across various port terminals, alongside incomplete container numbers for the uncleared stock, which severely hampered identification efforts.
