A newborn baby girl, believed to be just a day old, is currently receiving medical care at the Sombo Health Centre after being abandoned under bizarre circumstances in the Wa Metropolis of the Upper West Region.
The infant was rescued late Monday evening, October 19, following swift intervention by local residents and community leaders.
Speaking on the development, the Assembly Member for the Sombo Electoral Area, Hon. Abubakari Seidu, expressed deep worry over the incident, noting that it is the first of its kind in the area since he took office. He suggested that the perpetrator likely brought the newborn from another community to avoid detection.
“This is the first time such an incident is happening under my watch. It appears someone from outside brought and dumped the baby here in Sombo,” Hon. Seidu stated.
He further revealed that the matter has been formally reported to the police, who advised him to make public announcements across neighboring communities.
“The police suggested we inform the public so families can remain vigilant. If someone’s relative or partner left home pregnant or with a newborn and returned without the child, this information will prompt them to investigate,” he added.
Strongly condemning the act as immoral and unfortunate, the Assembly Member urged young women facing distress to seek support rather than resort to endangering innocent lives.
Health officials at the Sombo Health Centre confirm the baby is stable and responding well to treatment under strict supervision. Police investigations remain ongoing to trace the mother.
