The Ghana Education Service (GES) has asked the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr. William Amankrah Appiah, and the Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Kwamena Owusu-Nketiah, to step aside from their positions immediately.
The decision forms part of ongoing investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct involving Mr. Zakaria Abdulai, the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
In an official statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at the GES, management clarified that the directive aims to prevent any potential interference with the probe.
“Management of the Ghana Education Service directs Dr. William Amankrah Appiah, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, and Mr Kwamena Owusu-Nketiah, Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, to step aside with immediate effect. This decision is intended to ensure that the investigations proceed without potential interference, nor the perception of it,” Mr. Fenyi stated.
Following the directive, both officials must surrender their administrative duties and all state properties to the Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mr. Thomas Kwame Boateng.
Addressing circulating rumours regarding the status of the accused headmaster, the GES confirmed that Mr. Abdulai remains interdicted.
“The headmaster also remains interdicted. Therefore, the public is urged to ignore any news making the rounds that the headmaster has been cleared,” the statement emphasized.
The Service appealed to the public for calm and cooperation while the authorities complete their thorough inquiry into the scandal.
