The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed Mr Zakaria Abdulai, who is aspiring as constituency chairman for the Juaben constituency, to step aside with immediate effect.

The decision aims to pave the way for an unhindered investigation into sexual abuse allegations against him by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, signed by the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party explained that the directive follows further consideration of the matter, citing the overriding interest of transparency and accountability.

“After further consideration, FEC has directed that Mr Zakaria Abdulai step aside, in the overriding interest of transparency and accountability, to allow for an unhindered investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement read.

The party emphasised that the decision was taken in good faith and does not constitute a finding of guilt against Mr Abdulai.

“This position is taken in good faith and is in no way a determination of the merits of the allegations against Mr Abdulai, who remains entitled to the presumption of innocence,” the statement clarified, adding that the NDC trusts the CID will conduct a thorough, fair, and expeditious probe and will be guided by its outcome.

The NDC has consequently instructed the Ashanti Regional Election Committee and the Juaben Constituency Election Committee to take note of the directive and act accordingly.
