A search and rescue operation is underway along the coast to locate a missing fishing canoe and its seven crew members following their failure to return from a fishing expedition, police have confirmed.
The vessel, named Second Chance, departed the Sekondi Fishing Harbour on 9 October 2026 for fishing grounds offshore Axim. The owner of the canoe, Nana Kweku Atta, formally reported the incident to the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on 18 October 2026 after all efforts to reach the crew failed.
“The Western Regional Marine Police Command is working with the Ghana Navy, Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Fisheries Commission and fishing communities to locate a missing fishing canoe, Second Chance, and its seven crew members,” stated Chief Superintendent of Police Olivia ET Adiku, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Western Region.
Preliminary investigations reveal that repeated attempts to establish contact with the crew members were unsuccessful. Recent intelligence indicates the vessel may have suffered an engine failure, causing it to drift eastwards towards Tema and the Volta coastline, though its exact position remains unconfirmed.
To assist in the search efforts, authorities have alerted the Western Naval Command, the Eastern Naval Command in Tema, coastal police stations, the GMA, the Fisheries Commission, and local chief fishermen.
“The Police are working with the relevant agencies to establish the canoe’s last known position and locate the crew,” Chief Superintendent Adiku added, urging fishing communities along the coastline to report any sightings or relevant information immediately to the nearest police station.
