The Ghana National Gas Company Limited is finalizing plans to procure a third gas compressor aimed at improving operational efficiency and guaranteeing stable power supply across the country.
The proposed unit, with a handling capacity of approximately 220 MMscf of gas, will expand processing capacity while providing critical redundancy to avert power disruptions during routine maintenance.
Speaking to journalists at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Ms. Judith Adjobah Blay, indicated that the procurement process is in its concluding stages and an official agreement will be announced shortly.
She explained that establishing operational redundancy remains crucial to ending the periodic electricity outages locally known as “dumsor”, as it will allow technical teams to redirect gas processing through an alternative facility during maintenance without requiring a total shutdown of operations.
In a related development, Western Regional Minister Hon. Joseph Nelson praised the media for its vital role in national development and acknowledged traditional news outlets as the most reliable information source despite rising competition from social media platforms.
The Minister welcomed plans by Ghana Gas to expand into agricultural initiatives to curb youth unemployment, while urging management to involve the Regional Coordinating Council during the early planning stages of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects to ensure maximum public benefit.
Meanwhile, Ghana Gas has partnered with the Ellembelle District Assembly and the local Parliamentary Office to launch a Coastal Brigade initiative aimed at tackling sanitation, safeguarding marine ecosystems, and generating jobs across coastal communities.
Fully funded by Ghana Gas and managed by the District Assembly, the environmental initiative will recruit 250 local workers, nearly 90 per cent of whom will be women, to execute beach-cleaning activities across 20 communities.
Ms. Blay noted that the project underscores the company’s commitment to supporting healthy community environments, tracing the concept back to an earlier beach sanitation initiative introduced under the administration of the late former President John Evans Atta Mills.
Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, commended Ghana Gas for answering the assembly’s call for support, describing the project as an essential intervention that generates local jobs while addressing environmental degradation.
He called on beneficiaries to act as sanitation ambassadors in their respective communities and warned that strict supervision would be enforced, with payments tied directly to work performance and attendance.
Ellembelle District Chief Executive Hon. Joseph Agyekum stated that each of the 250 workers will receive GH¢700, with dedicated coordinators overseeing daily operations and Ghana Gas supplying protective equipment, reflective jackets, wheelbarrows, shovels, and rakes.
