A mounting GH¢459 million debt owed by state agencies and public institutions as of September 2026 is severely straining Ghana Water Limited’s operations.
The debt stock accrued by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) reached an exact total of GH¢459,006,000, a situation management has described as entirely unsustainable for maintaining daily operations and service delivery.
This revelation came to light during a high-level briefing with the Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Ahmed Ibrahim.
Addressing officials during the engagement, the sector Minister warned that the utility provider would face persistent operational bottlenecks unless an immediate, structured resolution was implemented.
“There must be a payment plan orchestrated,” the Minister said, stressing the need for government to honour its obligations to the company.
While acknowledging ongoing discussions regarding the rollout of prepaid water meters as a prospective long-term measure to curb systemic non-payment, the Minister emphasized that urgent intervention remains imperative to settle the outstanding arrears.
He reaffirmed that without a transparent and structured settlement arrangement, the overall operational efficiency of Ghana Water Limited will remain severely constrained.
