Plans are underway by the Ghana Maritime Authority to revamp and modernise key digital infrastructure, including the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) and Vessel Tracking and Monitoring Systems, aimed at strengthening operational efficiency and simplifying regional trade movement.
The Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Captain Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, revealed the initiative at the opening of a regional workshop focused on implementing the Maritime Single Window.
Addressing participants at the event, Captain Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali emphasised that the Authority intends to build on and upgrade current operational platforms to achieve smooth, effective maritime operations.
“We are all looking up to striving to see whatever systems we have in place, how we will build those systems, refine them and let them work more effectively. For example we have the ICUMS that is used here in Ghana, but we also have the advanced vessel traffic system that is used by GPHA,” he said.
He further highlighted the crucial connection between trade operations and safety protocols within the maritime domain.
“On the safety side we have the Vessel Traffic Monitoring System that is used by the Ghana Maritime Authority and the interface between maritime trade and safety are key.”
According to him, the multi-day regional gathering provides a vital platform for stakeholders to review the inner workings of these tracking systems and determine the best approach for scaling them up across the sector.
“So I believe that what we are going to do is over the next couple of days explore how these systems work and how we can upscale them in a better way that make trade transportation key. We can build on existing systems that we already have here in Ghana and I’m sure you may also have the same,” he added.
