Tax compliance Is a civic duty, not a burden – Justice and Accountability Forum Convener

October 22, 2026

The Convener for the Justice and Accountability Forum, Nana Bonsu, has admonished Ghanaian businesses to remain steadfastly committed to their tax obligations to drive national development.

According to him, tax compliance is both a legal requirement and a vital civic duty, as domestic tax revenue serves as the primary engine for funding critical infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, and essential public services across the country.

Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Bonsu stressed that every enterprise—ranging from sole proprietorships and partnerships to corporate entities—must fully register with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and fulfill their statutory tax obligations based on their revenue and sector.

Addressing host Kwabena Agyapong, the anti-corruption and governance advocate argued that citizens and corporate entities cannot legitimately demand accelerated development from the government while actively evading or neglecting their taxes.

“We cannot continuously demand infrastructure and social development from the government without paying our taxes. Tax compliance should not be viewed as a punitive burden, but rather as a shared obligation aimed at transforming the country. Revenue mobilisation remains the key determinant of national growth, directly influencing our ability to invest in social programmes and economic stability,” he declared.

Nana Bonsu encouraged Ghanaians and local business owners to cultivate a culture of voluntary tax declaration and prompt payment to ensure equitable and sustainable national development.

He also commended the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Anthony Akwasi Sarpong, for his exemplary leadership, professionalism, and diligence since assuming office, noting that his approach has brought strategic clarity to tax administration.

He highlighted that the GRA remains genuinely committed to supporting struggling businesses to navigate their tax obligations seamlessly rather than crippling their operations.

“The GRA under its current leadership has demonstrated deep understanding and capability. It is crucial for businesses facing financial or operational challenges to proactively engage and inform the authority. By seeking early guidance, enterprises can work out structured and manageable payment arrangements that allow them to remain compliant without folding up,” Nana Bonsu added.
