Ghana is set to take delivery of approximately one million electricity meters early next year in a major bid to resolve the lingering shortage that has plagued power consumers across the country.
The intervention follows persistent public outcry over the protracted delays and non-availability of meters, which has forced many applicants to wait indefinitely or resort to alternative, unapproved channels to access electricity.
Disclosing this to the media, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Dr. Shafic Suleman, highlighted that meter acquisition remains the single highest grievance reported by consumers to the regulatory body.
He noted that the long-standing backlog in the system has severely impacted power distribution, placing a heavy burden on consumers seeking legal connections.
To address the situation, the regulator is actively engaging key government stakeholders and power distribution companies to streamline procurement and rollout processes.
“We’ve complained and we are working with the various agencies, the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Energy and ECG itself to get them to be supplied with some number of meters and I think they are working towards making available about 1 million meters either early next year so that Ghanaian consumers when they apply for meters they will be given,” Dr. Suleman stated.
The PURC boss reassured the public that close collaboration with the relevant ministries and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will continue to ensure swift procurement and seamless distribution once the meters arrive.
