President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in the historic city of Gondar, Ethiopia, for an official visit following an invitation from Ethiopian Prime Minister H.E. Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali. The visit precedes the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, scheduled to take place in Bahir Dar.
Shortly after landing at Gondar Airport, President Mahama joined Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to operationalise the Megech Irrigation Development Project, a major dam-and-reservoir infrastructure built to transform regional agriculture and water distribution.
The project, which originally commenced 18 years ago, remained stalled until Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali revived and completed the construction over the past three years.
Covering an expanse of 870 hectares with a storage capacity of 185 million cubic metres, the Megech Dam is structured to drive socio-economic growth across the country.
The infrastructure will irrigate 17,000 hectares of agricultural land to enhance food security and crop yield, while supplying clean, potable water to Gondar and adjacent satellite communities.
President Mahama commended the government and people of Ethiopia for their persistence in executing a long-term project capable of supporting future generations.
The President will proceed to Bahir Dar on Saturday to chair the 12th Tana High-Level Forum, where African leaders, policymakers, and security experts will deliberate on peace, governance, and security challenges facing the continent.
