Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has disclosed that his election to the high office in 2021 was made possible through cross-party support, revealing that not all Members of Parliament on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress voted for him.
Addressing participants at the 2026 National PR Summit in Koforidua, the Speaker explained that his victory was anchored on votes from the New Patriotic Party bench alongside his main support base.
According to him, maintaining fairness and holding a balanced stance as a candidate from the opposition party played a decisive role in convincing members from the governing side to back his candidacy.
“That with the low numbers that I had in parliament as a Speaker of a party’s incumbent Speaker who contested… if I wasn’t holding the balance well between the others, from the other side NPP would have voted for me to win to be Speaker,” he said.
Emphasising his position on the historic election that ushered in the 8th Parliament, Mr Bagbin noted that he possesses full records of the voting pattern from that sitting.
“I have the details. It’s not all NDC members who voted for me,” Mr. Bagbin added.
He maintained that his fair-minded approach to parliamentary affairs earned him the trust of MPs across the political divide, insisting his assertions reflect the true outcome of the secret ballot.
