A 24-year-old Nigerian national, Mariam Yussif, will spend the next seven years behind bars with hard labour after the Gender-Based Violence Court in Tamale convicted her of human trafficking.
The sentence, handed down on Thursday, October 22, 2026, follows an intensive police investigation into a cross-border syndicate that lured young women from Nigeria into Ghana for commercial sexual exploitation.
Yussif was apprehended alongside her 22-year-old sister, Precious Clement, during a targeted operation in Yendi on August 17, 2026.
Arraigned two days later under Section 2(1) of the Human Trafficking Act, 2005 (Act 694), Yussif maintained her innocence, prompting a full trial while she remained in custody.
Following weeks of testimony and legal proceedings, the presiding judge found Yussif guilty on all counts, ordering her immediate transfer to the Tamale Central Prison to serve out her term.
Meanwhile, investigators cleared Precious Clement of all charges due to a lack of incriminating evidence, leading to her immediate discharge.
Police authorities confirmed that two young women rescued during the crackdown have since been safely repatriated to Nigeria and reunited with their families.
Commending the outcome, the Northern Regional Police Command highlighted the successful prosecution as a testament to intelligence-led policing and rigorous evidence gathering.
The Command reiterated its resolve to dismantle trafficking networks, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies to safeguard vulnerable individuals from organized exploitation.
