Border security officials at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York have intercepted and confiscated a significant quantity of prohibited agricultural products transported in luggage originating from Ghana.
The illicit contraband, weighing a total of 72 lbs (approximately 32.6 kilograms), comprised an assortment of fresh yams, vegetables, and local spices packed inside a passenger’s bag.
The interception was made possible through the detection work of K9 Rowdy, a trained agricultural canine unit stationed at JFK Airport under the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Executive Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Field Operations, Diane J. Sabatino, confirmed the development in an official statement shared on social media.
According to Commissioner Sabatino, the canine alerted officers to the baggage during routine customs checks, preventing the unauthorized entry of the agricultural goods into the country.
She commended the detector dog for its critical role in stopping the items at the border, noting that K9 Rowdy had a busy and successful day protecting the nation’s borders from potential biological and agricultural risks.
Strict customs regulations enforce restrictions on bringing undeclared plant matter, fresh produce, and uncertified spices into foreign territories to safeguard domestic agriculture against foreign pests and disease contamination.
“K9 Rowdy had a busy day at JFK! He alerted to a bag from Ghana with 72 lbs of yams, veggies, and spices—all prohibited,” the post on X stated.
“Thanks to Rowdy, these items were stopped at the border,” it added.
