PURC assures consumers over planned ECG meter audit

PURC-2

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has stepped in to allay fears among electricity consumers regarding the upcoming meter audit exercise announced by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Public anxieties have mounted in recent days over the exact scope and potential fallouts of the planned operation. However, the regulatory body maintains that robust safeguards will be instituted to protect the public throughout the entire duration of the exercise.

Speaking to the media, Executive Secretary of the PURC, Dr Shafic Suleman, clarified that the Commission is actively reviewing the audit framework to ensure transparency and prevent any negative impact on service users.

He disclosed that the regulator plans to break down the technical details of the framework into an accessible format so that members of the public fully understand what the audit entails ahead of its commencement.

“Be rest assured that we are going to look at the audit framework again and probably summarise the content of it and make it available to the Ghanaian consumer from the perspective of ECG before they even go. So, let’s not be too interested in the issues but let’s defer it to the hands of the regulator,” Dr Suleman stated.

He further reiterated the Commission’s commitment to standing in the gap for electricity users while collaborating closely with the utility provider.

“We will be engaging ECG further to ensure that in the audit framework, whatever we think the consumer needs to know, we will make it available for the consumer to know. At the same time, PURC is going to scrutinise the framework once again to ensure that it doesn’t affect the consumer negatively. And they will also be safe-guided because that’s the reason why we are there. We are there to serve the Ghanaian consumer,” he added.

The PURC expects this intervention to clarify the objectives and operational procedures of the audit, ensuring consumers are well-prepared before field operations begin.
