The prosecution in the ongoing illegal mining trial involving Akonta Mining Company Limited and two others has formally closed its case at the Accra Criminal Court.

Deputy Attorney General Srem Sai disclosed that state prosecutors, working alongside Criminal Investigation Department officers from the Ghana Police Service, rested their case after presenting three witnesses to establish the Republic’s charges against the accused persons.

The prosecution’s witnesses included two former employees of Akonta Mining Company Limited and a police detective. During their testimony, the former employees gave evidence detailing the direct involvement of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako in illegal mining activities within the Tano-Nimire Forest Reserve.

To bolster the testimonies of the former workers, the detective presented key evidence to the court, including drone footage, audiovisual materials, and official communications documenting the alleged illegal operations.

Defense counsel for the accused persons, who have consistently maintained their innocence and sought to distance themselves from all mining activities in the forest reserve through cross-examination, requested permission from the court to recall the first prosecution witness for additional questioning.

The court subsequently granted the defense until Friday, October 30, to file a formal motion regarding the recall of the witness. Proceedings have been adjourned to November 4 for the motion to be heard.
