Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has commended the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) for its innovative investments aimed at expanding cancer diagnosis and treatment across the country, describing the effort as a clear demonstration of what prudent financial management can achieve for national development.
Speaking at the official press launch of the ThankYouTeacher National Raffle Campaign in Accra, the Vice President highlighted the Association’s strategic investments in the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, which continue to enhance access to specialized oncology care. She singled out prominent economist and investment specialist Mr. Kwame Pianim for his leadership and pivotal contribution towards the realization of the healthcare facility.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the campaign launch was particularly timely as the country joins the rest of the world to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She observed that a cancer diagnosis often imposes an overwhelming emotional and financial burden on patients and their families, making accessible and affordable treatment an urgent priority.
Welcoming the strategic partnership between the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares, the Vice Veep President praised ongoing efforts to decentralize specialized healthcare services beyond the national capital. She emphasized that healthcare delivery must remain deeply human-centred, stressing that compassion, continuity of care, and affordability are just as vital as investments in medical technology and modern physical infrastructure.
While affirming that the central responsibility for public healthcare delivery rests firmly with the Government, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pointed out that non-state institutions like GNAT demonstrate how structured organizations can effectively mobilize private resources for the broader benefit of society.
She concluded by praising the Association for using the ThankYouTeacher initiative to celebrate and support the teaching profession, noting that teachers play a foundational role in shaping the human resojurce capacity of every other sector in the nation.
