The Ghana Prisons Service has announced a sweeping restructuring of its leadership tier following high-level appointments approved by the Presidency.

Acting on the advice of the Prisons Service Council and pursuant to Article 207 of the 1992 Constitution, President John Dramani Mahama has sanctioned the elevation of fifteen senior officers, with the directives taking retrospective effect from July 1, 2026.

The extensive administrative overhaul sees seven Deputy Directors of Prisons (DDPs) elevated to the rank of Directors of Prisons (DOPs). Among those assuming the newly minted directorate responsibilities are regional commanders and key departmental heads stationed across the country.

Key regional postings affected include the Western Region, where DDP Abraham Nii Moi Allotey steps up as Director following his tenure as Sekondi Central Prison commander, alongside DDP Thompson Otsyokpo who transitions from the Bono-Ahafo Regional command and Sunyani Central Prison.

The shake-up further repositions DDP Edward Ashun from Greater Accra command, DDP Joseph Asabre from the Ankaful Maximum Security facility in the Central Region, alongside headquarters-based senior administrators DDP David Ofosu Addo, DDP Alfred Moses Cudjoe, and DDP Samuel Fiifi Dontoh.

Complementing the top-tier promotions, eight Assistant Directors of Prisons (ADPs) have successfully crossed the threshold to become Deputy Directors of Prisons.

This cohort features prominent administrative and technical figures including ADP Joseph Aggrey-Graham, ADP Gandaa Bekanuo Zunuo, Dr. Eng. ADP Aaron Agbenyegah Agbo, Esq. ADP Michael Osei Akoto, ADP Forson Odei, ADP Naja Daniel Donkor, ADP Nasom Kwabena Bawah, and ADP Matilda Nyampong.

In an official statement addressing the career milestones, the leadership of the institution extended warm felicitations to the promoted personnel.

“The Ghana Prisons Service congratulates all the newly appointed officers and wishes them success as they assume their new appointment and responsibilities,” the dispatch noted.

Reiterating its institutional ethos, management emphasized that the service remains steadfastly anchored to core operational standards.

“The Service remains committed to professionalism, discipline, effective leadership and the continued advancement of its mandate of safe custody, welfare, reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners,” the release concluded.

The comprehensive appointments were officially signed off by Deputy Director of Prisons Janet Asabea, who heads the Public Affairs Department at the Prisons Headquarters in Accra.
