A communications team member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Essah, has slammed the government, accusing it of blatantly deceiving Ghanaian workers with what he described as an insulting salary increment.
His comments follow the signing of a multi-year public service remuneration agreement between the government and Organised Labour, securing a 9 percent increase in total remuneration for the 2027 fiscal year, effective 1 January 2027, and a 10 percent across-the-board pay rise for 2028.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Essah stated that the increment is the exact opposite of the grand promises made to the Ghanaian electorate by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while in opposition.
He contended that the current administration treated public sector employees with utter disrespect after securing power through grand promises, leaving ordinary citizens struggling to cope with skyrocketing costs of living, high rents, and steep utility tariffs.
Comparing the records of both political parties, the NPP communicator touted his party’s track record in managing public sector remuneration, recalling that the previous administration granted workers a 15 percent Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) calculated on base pay, as well as a 24 percent salary increase to cushion them against economic shocks.
He argued that the NPP treated Ghanaian workers with genuine fairness and delivered significantly better remuneration packages, whereas the current NDC administration has taken the nation backward. Although an NDC representative countered that current economic circumstances are vastly different, Mr Essah insisted that the government’s performance has fallen far below expectation.
“The NDC threw dust in the eyes of workers, promised them better salaries. They told Ghanaians taht we don’t resoect workers and we don’t value them and so they should vote us oyt ahd bring them in. They listened and voted for the NDC with the hope if increading their salaries with huge percentages. But it has turned up be deception. Workers are struggling to pay their rent, utilities and other cost if living. NDC had always scammed Ghanaians. They lied to Ghanaians. They scammed Ghanaians with thier one three three initiative,” he stated.
The NPP representative added that the NDC has consistently proved to be a party incapable of delivering on its own manifestos and pledges to the electorate.
Describing the newly negotiated 9 percent pay rise as complete peanuts, Mr Essah urged organized labour and Ghanaian workers nationwide to firmly reject the deal and demand a substantial revision that reflects current economic realities.
“If you have nothing to offer Ghanaian worjwrs, you don’t give them peanuts. This is an insult and will have no real impact on workers. I will therefore advice the workers to resit or reject the increment and demabd for more. Nobe percebt will not do anything significant ro the Ghanaian worker,” he declared.
