The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has linked the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to a colossal cryptocurrency heist targeting exchange giant Binance, following the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets.
According to federal investigators, the malicious cyber activity was carried out by the North Korean cyber group known as “TraderTraitor.”
“TraderTraitor actors are converting stolen assets primarily into Ethereum (ETH). It is expected these assets will then be further laundered by converting them using DeFi and instant swap services as they prepare them for further laundering stages,” the FBI disclosed.
The operation, conducted alongside the Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation, revealed that illicit actors are actively moving funds across decentralized finance platforms to obscure the trail.
In response to the unprecedented raid, law enforcement authorities have appealed to the global digital asset ecosystem to assist in neutralizing the stolen funds.
“The FBI, USSS, and IRS-CI are urging private sector entities including THORNode operators, RPC node operators, instant exchanges, DeFi services, blockchain analytics firms, and other virtual asset service providers to block transactions with or derived from addresses TraderTraitor actors are using,” the agency stated.
Federal authorities reaffirmed their intention to disrupt Pyongyang’s cybercrime network and asked anyone with relevant details to report to local field offices or the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
