Ghana has formally welcomed a major policy shift by the United Kingdom regarding reparatory justice and the transatlantic slave trade, describing it as a watershed moment in the global effort to address historical atrocities.

The President, John Dramani Mahama, expressed cautious optimism and appreciation following a declaration by UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, which signaled Britain’s openness to a formal apology and structured dialogue on transatlantic enslavement.

Speaking in his capacity as the African Union Champion on Reparations and Chair of the Global Advisory Panel on Reparatory Justice, President Mahama commended the UK government’s statement for what he termed a bold, reflective, and honest reckoning with its colonial legacy.

“I welcome, with cautious optimism and appreciation, the UK Prime Minister’s acknowledgement of the horrific violation of human dignity inflicted by the Transatlantic Slave Trade, as well as the UK government’s openness to a formal apology and structured dialogue,” President Mahama stated.

The developments follow the recent adoption of a Ghana-led United Nations resolution that categorized the transatlantic slave trade and racialized chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity. Government officials noted that the UK’s willingness to engage in dialogue represents a refreshing departure, given its abstention during the UN vote.

Ghana’s unique historical position as home to the highest concentration of slave castles and forts in the world gives the country a profound voice on the matter. Highlighting coastal monuments such as Cape Coast, Elmina, and Christianborg castles, President Mahama noted that while an apology cannot undo past horrors, it opens the path toward genuine healing.

Ghana has reiterated its solidarity with African Union member states, CARICOM, and the broader diaspora, endorsing calls for a structured framework involving all affected nations.

The government outlined five key areas to guide future engagements, including a formal apology, international commitments to dismantle systemic racism, targeted investments in education, healthcare, and climate resilience, the restitution of stolen cultural heritage, and strategic economic partnerships to reform global financial structures.

Commending Prime Minister Burnham and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband for their statesmanship, the Ghanaian leader affirmed that confronting historical truth remains an act of justice and moral courage.

The statement, signed by Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to walking the path toward lasting reconciliation and an end to racial discrimination.
