TraffiTech cameras has captured motorists driving over 130 km/h in 50–60 km/h speed limit zones with signs – ACP Obeng

The Director of Education, Research, and Training at the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alex Kwaku Obeng, has expressed deep concern over the alarming rate at which motorists continue to flout speed regulations, despite the operationalisation of the automated TraffiTech GH system.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s news flagship programme, Nyankonton Mu Nsem, ACP Obeng revealed that footage captured by the newly installed cameras across various regions highlights reckless driving habits, with several individuals far exceeding designated safety limits.

“The recordings have exposed severe indiscipline on our roads. We have observed instances where drivers travel at speeds above 150 km/h in zones restricted to 50 km/h or 60 km/h,” he said.

He explained that automated notifications, detailing offences alongside the reminder “speed kills, reduce it now”, are sent directly to vehicle owners, accompanied by applicable penalty units and vehicle data.

Affected owners can inspect visual proof by logging onto www.ghana.gov.gh, entering their ticket number, and selecting the option to view photo and video evidence.

Addressing concerns regarding corridors lacking explicit speed signage, ACP Obeng clarified that motorists remain liable for infractions.

Under the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519), speed thresholds are fixed at 30 km/h within school, health, and commercial zones; 50 km/h in built-up urban areas; 90 km/h on highways; and 100 km/h along motorways. Licensed drivers are legally required to know and observe these limits regardless of posted signs.

Furthermore, he stressed that law enforcement agencies hold no legal obligation to post warning signs prior to monitoring corridors.

“The absence of a warning sign does not invalidate a traffic offence. TraffiTech GH was designed by the Ghana Police Service to enhance compliance and significantly reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on Ghanaian roads,” ACP Obeng added.

Explaining the system’s process, he noted that offenders receive an Electronic Notification of Vehicle violation (ENV) directly via SMS from the GPS-MTTD.

”The TraffiTech GH system operates through SMS-based Electronic Notifications of Vehicle violations (ENVs) sent by the GPS-MTTD. Recipients should first verify that the Sender ID matches GPS-MTTD. Valid notices include complete incident details: ticket number, vehicle registration, date, time, location, specific offence, fine amount, and payment deadline.”
