Motorists who default on paying traffic fines issued under the automated Traffitech-GH system face a daily late fee of 1 per cent on the original fine once the 14-day allowable payment window expires.
Beyond the daily financial penalty, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will refuse to transact business with defaulting vehicle owners until all outstanding debts are settled.
Under the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519), Electronic Notices of Violation (ENV) are transmitted directly to the registered mobile numbers of vehicle owners.
The law holds registered owners strictly liable for offences committed with their vehicles, regardless of who was driving at the time of the infraction.
Motorists who have sold their vehicles but failed to officially update ownership details with the DVLA also remain legally responsible for any fines incurred. However, individuals tagged with vehicles they have never owned must report immediately to the Traffitech-GH Call Centre, as false reporting carries extra sanctions. In cases of theft, vehicle owners must promptly notify the Police.
To clear outstanding fines and lift DVLA service restrictions, drivers can check their status by dialling *220# using their vehicle registration or driver’s licence number. Payments can be made online at https://traffitech-ghpay.nib.com.gh or via mobile shortcode 7100# (selecting option 6).
Drivers wishing to challenge a citation must initiate a contest online within 14 days of the ENV issuance date, select a preferred Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) regional police station, and present their reference number and valid identification at the hearing.
Addressing concerns over camera accuracy, authorities confirm that all speed-enforcement devices deployed under the Ghana Police Service are type-approved and calibrated by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to international standards. Specific fine structures and penalty point calculations are governed by the Ninth and Thirteenth Schedules of L.I. 2519.
