A routine border patrol ended in tragedy on Tuesday when a violent explosion involving suspected dynamite claimed the life of a Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer and left another battling for survival at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
The fatal blast also killed civilian occupants of a motor tricycle who were allegedly smuggling the explosive materials through an unapproved route along the Ghana-Burkina Faso frontier.
Security sources reveal that trouble began when the tricycle operators bypassed a security checkpoint and ignored direct commands from border patrol officers to pull over.
Determined to stop the suspect vehicle from slipping into the country, the GIS officers mounted a hot pursuit along the unapproved track. The chase took a catastrophic turn when the suspected dynamite loaded onto the tricycle detonated unexpectedly, instantly engulfing both the vehicle and the pursuing officers in the blast.
One officer died on the spot from the impact, while a second officer sustained severe injuries and remains in critical condition under intensive medical care. Details surrounding the identity of the victims and the health facility currently managing the injured officer are being closely guarded by security authorities.
The horrific incident has exposed serious security vulnerabilities along Ghana’s northern frontier, highlighting the persistent dangers officers face in curbing the illegal transportation of hazardous goods across unapproved border points.
