The Majority Leader in Parliament, James Agalga, has thrown down the gauntlet to the Minority caucus, declaring that his side is fully prepared to confront any parliamentary motions challenging Speaker Alban Bagbin’s recent ruling on the high-profile drug busts controversy.
Tensions have been brewing in the Chamber after the Minority announced its intention to contest the Speaker’s decision, which threw out their calls for an official parliamentary probe into the recent drug seizures in the country.
Speaking to journalists during a leadership engagement in Parliament, Mr. Ayariga maintained that the Majority has zero intention of dodging parliamentary scrutiny and urged the Minority to move past empty threats and take action.
“To file a number of motions, so let them jump the first step and if they do, I can assure you that we shall meet them squarely,” he asserted.
Emphasising that accountability remains a pillar of legislative work, the Majority Leader indicated that his side would not undermine parliamentary procedures, offering instead to back the Minority in using legitimate legislative tools to exercise oversight.
“Oversight is one of the core functions of Parliament and we of the Majority would not run away from performing the functions of Parliament,” Mr. Ayariga stated.
He further noted that the Majority is eagerly awaiting the formal submission of the papers so the house can deliberate on the matter.
“So I can assure all Ghanaians that we look forward to having their motions submitted to the Speaker for the Speaker’s kind attention and action,” he added.
The upcoming battle follows the Minority’s fierce opposition to Speaker Bagbin’s dismissal of their petition, setting the stage for a fiery showdown on the floor of the House once the motions are formally admitted.
