Proceedings in Parliament descended into dramatic scenes on Tuesday evening after members of the Minority caucus staged a mass walkout following the Speaker’s order to forcefully remove the Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, from the floor.
The tension escalated during a debate when Mr Jinapor, who serves as the Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, claimed that Ghanaian diplomatic passports were being illicitly sold for GH¢50,000.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, immediately intervened, instructing the Damongo legislator to retract the unverified assertion. Speaker Bagbin assured the MP that he would be granted the opportunity to bring the matter back to the floor once concrete evidence was produced to support the claim.
However, Mr Jinapor repeatedly declined to comply with the directive, remaining reluctant to withdraw his statements. The stance prompted the Speaker to instruct the Marshal of Parliament to escort the lawmaker out of the chamber.
As Mr Jinapor gathered his documents and proceeded towards the exit, his colleagues on the Minority front rose in unison and exited the chamber alongside him in a show of solidary action, bringing parliamentary business to a temporary halt.
