PRETAG backs GES directive to make up for lost teaching time

November 3, 2026

The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has voiced support for the decision by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to cancel the upcoming mid-term break for basic schools across the country.

The directive, which affects the two-day break initially scheduled for Thursday, November 5, and Friday, November 6, 2026, aims to help basic schools recover lost instructional hours following a recent industrial action by teachers.

A official statement issued from the GES Headquarters by Daniel Fenyi urged all basic schools to remain open and carry out full academic operations on the specified dates. The management further advised headteachers, staff, parents, and guardians to adjust their plans in line with the new directive.

Addressing the development on Rainbow Radio’s mid-day news flagship, Nyankonton Mu Nsem, the Communications Director of PRETAG, Kingsley Ayimadu, affirmed that members of the association are fully aligned with the management’s strategy to restore lost classroom hours.

“The directive from the Ghana Education Service is valid, and as teachers, we stand prepared to cooperate with the authorities to ensure our pupils recoup the instructional time lost during the strike,” Mr. Ayimadu stated.

He nevertheless lamented the recurring friction between educators and state authorities, stressing that teachers often feel forced into industrial action when their grievances are ignored.

“It is deeply painful when the government turns a deaf ear to the legitimate concerns of teachers, despite the immense sacrifices we make daily for the progress of this nation,” he remarked.

Touching on the core issues that provoked the strike, Mr. Ayimadu revealed that over 20,000 teachers are still owed outstanding arrears by the government. He cautioned that while educators are currently fulfilling their duties, another strike remains on the horizon if the financial obligations are not settled promptly.

He further criticized the administrative handling of the issue, faulting the GES for poor coordination with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department regarding the accurate data of affected teachers.

“The Ghana Education Service must fix the communication gap with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department. The continuous delay in reconciling data for unpaid teachers is completely unnecessary and unacceptable,” Mr. Ayimadu added.
