Bagbin-Speaker-of-Parliament

Parliament resumed sitting today with a stern warning from the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who declared that the House will strictly enforce punctuality throughout the new meeting.

Delivering his welcome address, Rt. Hon. Bagbin instructed parliamentary leadership, committee chairpersons, and all Members of Parliament to structure their schedules to guarantee the efficient use of legislative time.

He cautioned MPs against late arrivals, making it clear that proceedings will start precisely as scheduled.

“In particular, Parliament will sit on time. If you say we are sitting at two, at two I should be reading the prayers. If you want to be left behind, we will do so,” he warned.

The Speaker highlighted a demanding legislative workload awaiting the House, which includes the upcoming 2027 Budget presentation, ongoing constitutional reform discussions, and nine instruments currently undergoing committee review.

The agenda for the meeting also features 244 papers slated for presentation, alongside 584 committee referrals that demand thorough examination, follow-up, and prompt reporting.

Detailing the business of the House, Speaker Bagbin revealed that MPs are set to deliberate on 58 motions—comprising 53 public motions, four private members’ motions, and one half-hour motion.

“The House is also expected to consider 58 motions comprising 53 public motions, 4 private members motions, and one half hour motion,” Speaker Bagbin stated.

Touching on parliamentary accountability, he noted that 204 outstanding questions and three urgent questions are queued for answers.

To prevent delays, Rt. Hon. Bagbin directed committees to prioritize clearing all outstanding referrals, stressing that strict discipline and sound time management remain crucial to handling the heavy schedule and fulfilling public expectations.
