NPP’s ‘Yɛgye Yɛ Sika’ demonstration should be a wake-up call to govt — Political analyst

A political analyst, Samuel Boateng, has described the recent nationwide demonstration by the opposition New Patriotic Party as a legitimate constitutional right aimed at keeping the sitting government accountable.

His comments follow the nationwide protest staged by the party on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, where demonstrators took to the streets to demand the immediate removal of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The demonstration, dubbed “Yɛgye Yɛ Sika,” which translates to “We Are Reclaiming Our Money,” sought to press home demands for transparency and accountability regarding allegations surrounding the evacuation of Ghanaian citizens from South Africa as well as the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Rainbow Radio’s flagship news bulletin, Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Mr Boateng emphasized that the protest should serve as a clear reminder to the state authorities.

“The NPP, by the Constitution, has every right to demonstrate against issues it believes are not going well in order to keep the government accountable and prevent it from going wayward,” Mr Boateng stated.

He further noted that the NPP remains a credible alternative government capable of offering constructive criticism, given its prior governance experience.

“The NPP is an alternative government with the right to speak out, having been in power before and clearly understanding why it lost the previous election,” he explained.

Addressing the government’s relative silence on the controversial evacuation issue, the political analyst urged the administration to remain focused on its primary mandate to the public while addressing legitimate public concerns.

“The government does not need favours from anyone but must do the right thing for the citizens of this country; hence, it needs to remain focused,” Mr Boateng asserted.

He added that while it is not necessary for the government to react to every political provocation, addressing this specific matter post-demonstration would serve the nation’s interest.

“While a government does not need to respond to every single issue raised in the public domain, it would be far better for the government to speak on this particular matter following the demonstration,” he added.
