Spanish football has been plunged into profound mourning following the tragic death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel. The 30-year-old forward passed away after sustaining severe head and chest injuries during a Segunda División match against Andorra on Monday.
The fatal incident unfolded during stoppage time at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López as both sides fought to break a 2-2 deadlock.
De Miguel chased a long ball into open space near the centre circle when Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono rushed far out of his penalty area to clear the danger. Owono collided heavily with the advancing attacker, striking him with a knee challenge.
De Miguel immediately went down, clutching his torso before collapsing.
He received emergency medical treatment on the pitch for more than five minutes before being rushed to hospital via ambulance. Referee officials showed Owono a straight red card, and the fixture was subsequently abandoned.
While initial medical updates suggested a stable condition, the player’s health deteriorated overnight. Tenerife confirmed that De Miguel tragically suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away.
In an official statement, a heartbroken CD Tenerife expressed grief that words could scarcely capture, extending deep condolences to the player’s family, friends, and the wider football community.
Tributes have poured in from clubs, players, and governing bodies across Europe, while Spanish judicial authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
