Newly enrolled lawyers who film their maiden court appearances or hire videographers to document their entry into the courtroom risk facing severe sanctions, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has warned.
GBA President Efua Ghartey cautioned that such actions violate court rules and professional decorum, urging the young legal practitioners to immediately desist from the practice.
Addressing the issue, Mrs Ghartey highlighted that while veteran lawyers appreciate the excitement displayed by their newly qualified colleagues, recent trends have breached established ethical boundaries.
“We’ve seen some people take videos of their fresh legal steps into court. Please, it is not allowed,” she said. “So please don’t find a videographer to follow you as you enter the courtroom. It is not allowed.”
She added a stern reminder regarding the consequences of ignoring the warning, stressing that the association would not hesitate to initiate disciplinary proceedings if the conduct continues.
“As seniors, we are enjoying what is going on, but some people have crossed the line, and we don’t want to start calling for disciplinary matters,” she stated.
The warning underscores the strict prohibition against unauthorised recording within Ghanaian courtrooms and serves as a reminder to incoming lawyers to uphold the dignity and sanctity of the legal profession.
