Africa Education Watch, an education think tank, has lauded the Ghana Education Service (GES) for its introduction of a self-placement system for newly qualified teachers.

The initiative was launched at a press conference on Thursday, July 4, 2024, by the Director-General, Eric Nkansah.

Commenting on this in ad statement, the think tank said it will equip the “over 5,000 primary school classrooms without teachers at a time Ghana statistically has more teachers than needed,” and therefore pledged to partner with the relevant stakeholders to successfully implement the initiative to lessen the burden of districts with teacher deficits.

“We welcome the newly announced self-placement module for posting newly recruited teachers. It is our firm conviction that, if the system is transparent, and allowed to function effectively as intended, Ghana’s teacher posting inequities would be significantly addressed.

“Eduwatch and partners will support the GES to make this system work by monitoring closely from schools in Tatale Sanguli, Nanumba North, North East Goja, Tolon, Yendi, Biakoye, Brekum West, Garu, Nadowli Kaleo, Bunkpurugu, Nakpanduri, Sene West, and in Central Gonja where teacher deficit is highest at the kindergarten (86%) and primary school (73%) levels. It is our expectation that, our monitoring and feedback will help strengthen system effectiveness.”

The think tank further urged the GES to ensure transparency in the recruitment process “to ensure the system works effectively in ensuring every child in Ghana has access to a teacher.”

“We call for a transparent and accountable management of the new system, and an enhanced collaboration between the GES, Civil Society Organizations, Teacher Unions, School Management Committees, Parents, Members of Parliament and Local Governments to ensure the system works effectively in ensuring every child in Ghana has access to a teacher.”
