Stop the manipulation of the judiciary when you’re in power – Chief Imam tells NPP, NDC

The National Imam of the Shia Muslim community, His Eminence Abubakar Ahmad Kamaludeen, has taken a swipe at the two major political parties, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), over what he termedmanipulation of the judiciary.

He particularly slammed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he described as political hypocrisy in the appointment of seven new justices to the Supreme Court.

The Islamic cleric was surprised as to why a political party that proposed a cap on the number of justices appointed to the apex court would turn around and appoint seven new justices.

Speaking at a public prayer event on Tuesday (1 July), he said, “Our judiciary is in bad shape because of the manipulation of the political parties,” Imam Kamaludeen declared. “Six months ago, or barely one year ago, the NDC were advocating for a cap on the appointment of the justices of the Supreme Court, only for our president to appoint seven of them just recently.”

He said, “The seven judges that were appointed—those in Parliament who five years ago promoted them from High Court to the Appeal Court—are now saying they don’t recognise them. This is politics.”

He further underscored the need for judicial independence, warning that politicisation undermines public trust and democratic accountability.

“We can’t afford to politicise our judiciary. That is the only place where, when we are chased out, that’s the only place we run to,” he stressed. “They must be independent. They must be allowed to do their work without interference from the executive or political parties.”

“They are now administering the justice, but tomorrow they are going to stand before the Maker… for retribution for whatever they have done on this earth.”

He concluded, “We ask Allah for the truly independent judiciary. We ask Allah to protect them… and change the attitude of our executives and political parties.”
