President John Dramani Mahama announced that the DNA analysis of samples from the six other helicopter crash victims sent to South Africa has been successful.
He emphasised the importance of the analysis due to the victims being burnt beyond recognition.
Speaking at the Islamic prayers and final burial rites for two Muslim victims at the Military Cemetery in Accra, the President stated that the results for Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Limuna Mohammed were received, enabling today’s burial ceremony.
He further announced that the results for the six others, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, have been dispatched to the authorities.
The President assured that families of the deceased would be allowed to prepare for separate burial ceremonies, with government participation in all of them.
“As I speak, the forensic report for the rest has also arrived, and so, in consultation with their families, we will decide how the families are able to hold separate events to commemorate their loved ones, and the government will be there to assist them.”
He extended gratitude to the bereaved families of the two Muslims for their patience and allowing for their burial to be delayed for the DNA analysis to be completed.
“I want to thank the two families for their patience. We recognise that in Islam, when a person has died, they are supposed to be interred as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the state in which the bodies were made it difficult for us to identify positively which was which, and that’s why we had to go through the scientific process of identifying. Happily, that process was ended yesterday, and we received electronically the forensic results for our two brothers, and that’s why we have come to bury ahead.”
