The NPP claims intimidation and insecurity in Akwatia after their campaign failed – Gibril

August 20, 2025
Gibrill

National Democratic Congress’ Deputy Director of Elections, Mahdi Gibril, has criticised the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for making baseless claims against the government. He says the NPP is creating these allegations because their campaign failed in the Akwatia by-election.

Mahdi Gibril stated that the NPP realized they would lose the September 2 by-election to the NDC, so they decided to spread falsehoods about the government.

He indicated that the NPP initially campaigned by telling constituents the NDC’s actions frustrated the late MP, Ernest Kumi, to his death. They urged voters to punish the NDC by voting for the NPP’s candidate, Kwame Asumadu.

Mr Gibril said the NPP discovered the constituents saw through their lies, so they are now trying to shift their strategy by claiming the government is intimidating them.

“Forget about the NPP,” he said. “They are confused because their campaign failed, and they want to spread falsehoods. Don’t take the NPP seriously. They should stop wasting our time. The upcoming by-election in Akwatia will be peaceful. The Police have instructions to ensure a peaceful by-election, without any violent incidents. I don’t know what the NPP is thinking about. They have realised they will lose the Akwatia by-election and so they are confused. The party started a campaign about someone dying, that campaign failed, so they have decided to shift their focus with a new story about intimidation. Nobody has time to intimidate them. As the NDC, we want to get the people out to vote. No qualified voter will be prevented or stopped from voting on September 2, 2025.”

He also warned people who plan to cause chaos on election day to reconsider, because authorities will arrest and prosecute them regardless of their political affiliation or connections.
