Private legal practitioner, Kofi Bekai, has labeled the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) threat to remove any Chief Justice appointed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as “ridiculous and unfortunate.”
He argues that the judiciary should not be subjected to political games, as such actions can tarnish Ghana’s international reputation.
Mr. Bekai’s comments were in response to the recent removal of Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo as Chief Justice and a member of the Supreme Court bench.
He expressed concern that the grounds too her removal lack merit and appear to be a premeditated action.
Speaking on the program Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he stated, “This is not healthy for Ghana. It is an embarrassment for Ghana on the global stage. No condition is permanent, and the only constant is change. You cannot assume power forever.
The late Rawlings ruled for 19 years and left. At most, you can only be in office for eight years before another person takes over, and the power you used to do what you did would be used by another person to do similar things.”
He further added, “The fear we had as lawyers and as a nation was that if the Chief Justice is removed, the NPP will do the same thing. It has become a precedent that he Juli levery time a new president takes over, he or she would remove the Chief Justice. That is the reality. What the NPP is preaching is something they will do. It is, however, not going to benefit the country.”
