The Akwatia by-election victory is a reward for Mahama’s performance – NDC

Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, has attributed the party’s victory in the Akwatia by-election to the demonstrable performance of the administration led by

President John Dramani Mahama.
He stated that the NDC’s win in the closely contested election serves as a clear indication that a government must fulfill its promises to the electorate to earn their support.

Mr. Gunn emphasised that a continued commitment to positive achievements and good governance will ensure ongoing appreciation from the Ghanaian populace.

In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he remarked, “The Akwatia by-election is an eye-opener for all of us. The eight months of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration are yielding positive results, and people are beginning to appreciate our efforts. If we continue to perform in this manner, serving Ghanaians with humility, accountability, and discipline, I am confident we will remain in power for a long time. This was my personal experience.”

He conceded that the NDC’s campaign initially lagged, requiring them to intensify their efforts.
“We were trailing, so we had to put in extra work to turn the results around. We spent just two weeks intensely campaigning for the people’s votes. We extend our gratitude to the party’s leadership at the constituency level and also appreciate the constituents for their trust in voting for our candidate. We will not disappoint them. The government remains dedicated to prioritizing development in the area.”

When asked if they feared losing, he responded, “Not at all. We had just come from the Ablekuma North election and had gained valuable experience. Our message was clear, and the people understood what the NDC had to offer them. That made the difference and secured our victory.”

Ako Gunn also commended the Ghana Police Service for their professionalism, stating, “The security was superb. The Police conducted themselves professionally, and the process was smooth. The Electoral Commission also performed their duties commendably. The stakeholders involved in the elections managed the process well. If we continue in this manner, I believe we will not encounter any future challenges in our elections.”

Background

The Electoral Commission declared Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress the winner of the Akwatia by-election held on September 2, 2025.

Official results showed Mr. Bediako garnered 18,199 votes of the total valid votes cast.

His closest rival, Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party, secured 15,235 votes. Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana trailed far behind with 82 votes.

Out of the total ballots cast, 33,819 were valid, while 303 were rejected.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of Akwatia’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, earlier this year.
