The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has slammed the government, accusing it of using state institutions to intimidate critics and political opponents.
A statement issued by the NPP stated that President John Dramani Mahama and his administration have weaponized the Police and state security to intimidate and punish critics and opponents.
The NPP said the government has lost focus, and instead of fighting against illegal mining (“galamsey”) and the numerous violent attacks across the country, it was rather going after its critics.
The NPP asked the government to deal with the security situation in Bawku, Nkwanta, and Gbeniyiri in the Savannah Region.
“It is rather unfortunate that eight (8) months into the administration of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the government appears to have completely lost focus.
The government has used the past eight months to weaponise the state security, not in the fight against galamsey, and certainly not to protect the citizenry and deescalate the growing insecurity situation in many parts of the country, particularly in Bawku, Nkwanta, and Gbeniyiri in the Savanna Region, where recent communal clashes have claimed over 32 lives and displaced more than 50,000 Ghanaians, some of whom have become refugees in neighbouring countries.
The NDC government is rather focused on weaponising state security to intimidate and punish dissenting voices, particularly members of the opposition, in an excessive clampdown on free
speech. “
