The Health Train Eyecare Project 2026 has brought relief to residents of Weija-Gbawe, as they benefit from a comprehensive eye care initiative led by their member of parliament, Jerry Ahmed Shaib.
The five-day outreach programme, held from March 2 to March 6, 2026, aimed to tackle preventable eye diseases and improve access to specialist treatment for communities in need.
The initiative provided free screening and surgeries for cataract and pterygium conditions, major causes of visual impairment in the area.
With screening and treatment centres set up at strategic locations like Mallam Station, High Tension SCC, and Gbawe Gonse Down, hundreds of residents received medical attention closer to home.
The programme also included general medical screening and National Health Insurance Scheme registration, addressing broader health concerns.
Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, who is also the Second Deputy Minority Whip, speaking to the media emphasised the importance of accessible healthcare, saying, “Good vision is essential for productivity and quality of life. Unfortunately, many people delay treatment because they cannot afford surgery or specialist consultation.
This programme is meant to bring that care directly to the people.” He thanked partners like Ghana Adventists Health Services and SDA Valley View Hospital for their support.
Many beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the life-changing opportunity, while community leaders praised the initiative as timely and impactful. The Health Train Eyecare Project is part of the Hon. Shaib’s ongoing efforts to address pressing needs in Weija-Gbawe and surrounding communities.
