PUWU Condemns Hostility Towards ECG Staff

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) has issued a stern condemnation regarding the surge in public threats and accusations directed at Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) personnel following recent power outages.

In a press statement released on 27 April 2026, the union voiced “grave concern” over a trend of political and social actors demanding dismissals based on unfounded claims of sabotage.

PUWU dismissed these allegations, attributing the supply disruptions to systemic infrastructural deficits rather than employee negligence. The union maintained that “the Union wishes to state categorically that ECG staff are consummate professionals who work tirelessly, often with resource scarcity, yet deliver services to the Company’s valued customers.”

The statement highlighted chronic underinvestment as the primary cause of equipment shortages, noting that capacity issues in the Ashanti, Volta, and Oti regions require urgent upgrades. According to PUWU, “these are clearly infrastructure deficits which need government support and are not the fault of technically competent ECG staff as is being insinuated.”

Furthermore, the union warned that labeling staff as saboteurs endangers their safety in the field. Asserting that “these threats create disquiet among staff, undermine morale and disrupt industrial harmony,” PUWU pledged to resist political interference and urged the public to utilise formal channels for grievances rather than resorting to dangerous rhetoric.
