The Motorcycle Courier Union of Ghana has expressed support for the directive requiring courier companies and delivery riders nationwide to register on a new government digital platform, warning that failure to comply will result in sanctions.
According to Mr Stephen Adenyo, National Chairman, this move aligns with efforts by authorities to enhance regulation in the rapidly expanding logistics sector.
The platform aims to regulate courier and delivery services, thereby improving safety and trust within the country’s burgeoning e-commerce industry.
All courier companies and individual riders must register by March 31, 2026.
Following the deadline, a nationwide enforcement exercise is scheduled to commence on April 1, jointly conducted by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission and the Ghana Police Service.
Commenting on this, Mr Adenyo noted that they had appealed to authorities over the high cost of licence registration, which previously stood at GH₵1,070.
After several discussions with their leader, the amount has now been reduced by 50 per cent to GH₵570 to ease the financial burden on them.
Mr Stephen Adenyo explained that the drivers initially visited their leader to complain about the situation, saying the amount they were paying was too high considering the nature of their work.
According to him, many of them are workers who earn their income from the streets, making it difficult to raise such an amount to pay for the licence. After listening to their concerns, the leader assured them that he would look into the matter and find a solution.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Stephen Adenyo revealed that the issue was later taken to Parliament, where authorities agreed to reduce the fee by 50 per cent, bringing the amount down to GH₵570.
He noted that although there is a punishment for those who fail to register on time, drivers are currently preparing themselves to complete the registration.
He further explained that during a meeting with the riders, they were informed that no one would be excused from the registration process, regardless of status.
For that reason, everyone has been urged to comply and register within the given time.
Mr Adenyo added that riders will no longer have to visit the office physically to register. Instead, a shortcode has been provided to guide them through the process.
Those who do not have smartphones can use the shortcode, while others can visit the official website using the link provided. A WhatsApp number has also been introduced where users can chat with a system that provides information on how to complete the registration.
According to him, the payment process will also be simple. After completing the registration, users will receive a prompt on their phones to pay the GH₵570 using their mobile money number, just like the way people pay their utility bills.
He also mentioned that the registration will bring several benefits to riders.
He said an insurance company has been included in the arrangement to provide support in various situations, including accidents and cases where goods belonging to passengers go missing. He added that drivers have different communication platforms among themselves, which help them stay informed about important updates and developments.
