The leadership of the Tijjaniya Muslim Movement of Ghana (TMMG) has issued an appeal to President John Dramani Mahama and the Parliament of Ghana, demanding the immediate passage and presidential assent of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.
In a formal statement released from the National Secretariat on 8 April 2026, the movement described the legislation as a vital shield for the nation’s moral and cultural identity.
The TMMG grounded its demand in what it termed a “sacred duty” to the Ghanaian people.
The movement pointedly referenced the 2024 election campaign, during which the President reportedly offered firm assurances to religious and traditional leaders regarding his commitment to preserving national values.
According to the secretariat, leadership constitutes a covenant with the citizenry, and the protection of the traditional family structure remains a non-negotiable pillar of that agreement.
A significant portion of the appeal focused on the legislative pace within Parliament. The TMMG expressed concern over the frequency with which fiscal and administrative policies are pushed through under a “Certificate of Emergency,” sometimes within a single day.
The leadership argued that if economic matters can be treated with such haste, the preservation of Ghana’s “moral fibre” deserves even greater urgency.
They maintained that the potential erosion of cultural foundations represents a national emergency far more critical than any administrative or financial hurdle.
Invoking religious authority to support their position, the movement cited the Holy Qur’an, specifically verse 17:34, which reminds believers that every covenant will be questioned on the Day of Judgment.
The statement, backed by the National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, and the National President of the movement, Sheikh Abdul Wadud Haruna, emphasised that political promises regarding tradition and religion are not merely campaign rhetoric but solemn oaths made before God.
The TMMG additionally called for a unified front between the executive and legislative branches to safeguard the future of the Ghanaian family.
