NDC remains committed to transparent branch elections as a blueprint for all other elections – Mahdi Gibril

May 1, 2026
Gibrill

The Acting Director of Elections for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Gibril, has announced that the party has implemented comprehensive measures to guarantee free, fair, and transparent internal elections, spanning from the branch level to the national stage.

He indicated that the party’s internal electoral cycle will commence at the branch level. With the mandates of current leadership at all levels nearing expiration, the party has designated the period from May through December to elect a new cohort of leaders.

Specifically, the branch elections are scheduled to take place between 30 May and 30 June 2026.

Prospective candidates have a window from 2 May to 16 May 2026 to obtain their nomination forms.

These forms are available via the party’s official online platform and can be accessed either individually or in bulk at a cost of GH₵20 per form. Mr Gibril emphasised that members wishing to contest must ensure their financial standing is current, with all dues paid through the approved digital channels.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, the acting director underscored the critical nature of this initial phase. He stated: “The upcoming elections will be free and transparent because if we fail to get it right, it will affect the constituency, regional, and national elections.”

He further urged all party members and aspiring candidates to remain disciplined and to prioritise the strengthening of the party’s grassroots.

He noted that the election of branch executives should not be viewed merely as a pathway to becoming party delegates but as a commitment to becoming administrative leaders who will manage the NDC’s affairs within their respective jurisdictions for the next four years.

To safeguard the integrity of the process, Mahdi Gibril stressed that strict measures have been instituted.

The party has already instructed constituency executives to publicly announce and publish the official meeting venues and times for every branch.

Furthermore, all elections must be held at these approved locations during the scheduled meeting times.

The acting director explained that all election-related activities and financial contributions have been streamlined through the party’s unified digital platform.

This massive exercise is expected to cover 40,647 branches across 276 constituencies.

He ended by noting that these guidelines, approved by the National Executive Committee, are intended to uphold the fairness and absolute integrity of the electoral process.
