Afenyo-Markin’s Attacks on judge despicable and disgraceful – Analyst

Political analyst Nana Piesie Anto has strongly condemned Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over his recent attacks on the judge presiding over the Kwame Baffoe (alias Abronye DC) case.

Describing the attacks as despicable, Mr Anto stated that the Minority Leader’s remarks represent an unprecedented level of disrespect toward the judiciary and argued that the insults hurled at the judge must be roundly condemned.

His comments follow alleged attacks on a Circuit Court judge by the Minority Leader over the remand of the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

At a press conference on Sunday, 17 May 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about the continued remand of Abronye DC, arguing that it raises critical constitutional issues.

In his view, aspects of the legal process were inconsistent with constitutional protections regarding bail and freedom of expression.

However, he went further to launch a direct attack on the presiding judge, stating: “That Circuit Court 9 judge, I have no respect for him. I pray he summons me for contempt. I will continue to disrespect him until he upholds the law. It’s a shame on the judiciary, he doesn’t talk law.”

In response, Mr Anto insisted that the Minority Leader must be held to account for disrespecting the bench. Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said:
“It was despicable of him to have insulted the judge in that manner. This is unprecedented. You dare question the qualification of a judge and allege that he may not have passed his law exam. This is disgraceful. Show anyone who has had the courage to insult a judge in this manner before. This is shameful and we must be bold in condemning Afenyo-Markin.”

Mr Anto further argued that the NPP knows it can appeal the remand decision or file official complaints against the judge through the proper channels, rather than resorting to public insults and attacks on the judiciary. Because of this behavior, he claimed the party lacks the moral right to speak on the issue.

Additionally, the political analyst criticized the NPP for petitioning the diplomatic corps over the arrests of its affiliates, calling the move a mistake that undermines good governance and Ghana’s national sovereignty.

He argued that seeking foreign intervention is inappropriate, as such disputes should be handled strictly within Ghana’s legal institutions.

Mr Anto urged the NPP to change its attitude toward the state, noting that the party’s problematic conduct has remained consistent whether they are in government or in opposition. He advised the party to respect the law and stop behaving as though it is the sole authority on legal and political processes in the country.
